Substance: Diamond Plate Metal
Polycount’s Weekly Substance #10: Diamond Plate Metal
This fully procedural Substance Designer diamond plate metal material has the following customizable elements:
- Fully customizable diamond shape generator
- Diamond pattern control
- Surface metal qualities
- wear/ weathering
Rendered with Marmoset Toolbag 2
Making the Shape
Making the diamond shape heavily customizable relies on the usage of a few key nodes.
- The Polygon 2 node allows for falloff control for the overall silhouette
- The Distance node creates the three dimensional bevel from the silhouette shape, and also determines the relative flatness / sharpness of the diamond
- The bar is simply derived from a Capsule Shape, and a “folded” Linear Gradient. Expression driven transformations on the “folded gradient” allow for user control of the bar’s shape and angles
- In order to mirror and combine shapes and duplicates, I also created a Symmetry Node for Substance Designer that you can download from my Substance Share page.
- Multiple exposed falloff parameters allow for further sculpting of these elements, in isolation, and together
